A Legend Passes

It Is with deep regret and sadness that I announce the departure of Laurie Mumford, who passed away, aged 92 on Monday 22^nd May 2023.

Laurie was in pain on Saturday 20^th May 2023 and was admitted into hospital on Sunday, and sadly passed away in the early hours of Monday Evening.

Laurie was a legend at Romford Hockey Club, having joined 64 years ago in 1959 following a request from his boss, the late Eric Dodkins, to fill in for a couple of games. A 55-year playing career ended on Saturday 25^th October 2014, when he played his last game at the age of 83. The opposition on the day was an East London Team, captained by Romford old boy, Roger Lillystone. Laurie ended his playing career on a winning note when Romford won the game 1-0.

During his 64 years at Romford Hockey Club, Laurie covered many positions including President, Treasurer, Captain and Main Club representative. After his retirement from playing, he continued his role as President, an honoured position he was given in 1994 and one he held for 29 years. He also continued within the role of Romford Hockey Club Treasurer, refusing to change with the times, remaining old school using pen and paper. Although a mild-mannered person on the pitch, he was to be feared in his role as Treasurer, and if you owed the club money he would chase you down.

Up until the end of the 2023 season he remained a staunch supporter of the team, frequently turning up to watch on a Saturday before popping into the clubhouse for ½ a bitter shandy.

At the 2023 AGM, Laurie Mumford was recognised for his services to the club and was awarded Romford Hockey Clubs first ever Lifetime Achievement Award.

Our condolences go out to his wife Audrey, children Judith, Paul and their families. He will be sorely missed.

Funeral arrangements are still to be confirmed with a provisional date arranged at Bentley Crematorium.
