In a high-stakes clash for second place in the East Women's SE Division 3, Romford Ladies 1st XI faced Upminster Ladies 3 in what proved to be a tough but spirited contest. Romford entered the match with just 11 players, while Upminster had the advantage of two substitutes, which would play a crucial role as the game unfolded.
From the first whistle, Upminster pressed aggressively, moving the ball quickly and putting Romford’s defense under immediate pressure. Their sharp passing and swift attacking play resulted in the opening goal within just three minutes. Romford struggled to settle, and an unmarked Upminster player on the right channel capitalized again at the eight-minute mark to double the lead. The same right-side tactic led to Upminster’s third field goal shortly after, leaving Romford searching for a way back into the game.
Unfortunately, Romford suffered a major setback when their captain, Katie, was struck in the face by the ball while trying to stop an Upminster attack. The injury forced her to leave the pitch, reducing Romford to 10 players for the remainder of the match. Despite the early struggles, the team refused to lose heart.
Half-Time Reset
During the break, Romford coach Lawrie delivered an inspiring team talk, reminding the players that the result was not the most important thing—what mattered was their performance, consistency, and attitude on the pitch. With Katie unable to continue, tactical adjustments were made: Elanah moved into midfield, Kemi took position on the left side, and the team shifted to a two-forward formation to stabilize the midfield and support the defense.
Second-Half Fightback
With renewed determination, Romford Ladies came out strong in the second half, showing resilience and attacking intent despite being a player down. They pressed higher up the pitch and managed several breakthrough runs into Upminster’s defensive third, forcing their opponents onto the back foot. Sarah came agonizingly close to scoring, with one of her shots bouncing off the left goalpost in what could have been a momentum-shifting moment.
Romford’s persistence and team spirit were evident as they continued to battle against a full-strength Upminster side. However, the numerical disadvantage eventually took its toll, and Upminster capitalized with another three field goals. One was a direct strike from the top of the D, showcasing their attacking precision.
Upminster continued to push for more in the closing moments, earning several short corners. With all their players crowding Romford’s D in hopes of another goal, Romford’s defense stood firm, successfully disrupting their set-piece attempts and preventing further damage.
Final Whistle & Reflection
The match ended with a 6-0 victory for Upminster, who celebrated their second-place finish with a champagne toast. Despite the scoreline, Romford Ladies walked off the pitch with pride, knowing they had given everything, especially after losing their captain early in the match.
In recognition of their unwavering effort, the Man of the Match award was exceptionally given to all the Romford Ladies who played, a testament to their teamwork, perseverance, and commitment. While the result did not go in their favor, their fighting spirit and determination will serve them well in future matches.
