Womens 1st XI vs Southend & Benfleet 1

On a very cold and windy afternoon Romford Ladies 1s travelled to Southend & Benfleet for redemption having previously lost 1-0 at home. Romford had a point to prove and despite missing some key players, spirit was high.

Both teams started well with the home side pressing high from the start looking for an early lead. Not to be outdone Sonata Beach (in a man of the match performance) and the equally superb Emma James, were looking to continue their goal scoring ways of late.

After some good pressure, S&B scored first from a short corner and the teams seemed well matched at the end of the first half. Entering the second half Romford felt positive and with the forwards having a great game anything was possible.

The second half started slowly for both sides, until great skill from the S&B striker found the top right corner. A quick response from Romford when a well earned short corner led to a goal, with Emma scoring after a slip from Loz Curtis to Sonata.

S&B continued to attack quickly and despite some great defending particularly by Abbie Lagden, a third goal from another short corner penalised Romford for some sloppy mistakes. With heads down, it wasn’t long until a quick break by the home team found the net again. However, credit to the Romford team no-one gave up and this was rewarded with an excellent individual run, skill and strike by captain Katie Williams to score Romford’s second goal. The final ten minutes were again quite evenly matched, with no further goals final score Southend & Benfleet 4 – Romford 1s 2.

Overall, some great individual performances against a very strong team.
