On a chilly morning, Romford Ladies faced off against Brentwood Ladies 2s in a match that almost didn't go ahead due to a partially flooded pitch. However, after a quick pitch inspection and a bit of optimism, the game proceeded.
The team started strong after a brisk warm-up, and from the get-go, it was clear that Romford was in control. As always, our defence was solid at the back, distributing the ball to set up Romford’s attacking play. Great passing from Lorraine and Abbie L to the forwards Sonata, Kemi, and Ellie. The 3 forwards combined well to create opportunities in the final third, constantly testing the Brentwood defense.
Despite Romford's sharp attacking play, Brentwood were no pushovers, putting in some aggressive tackles and working hard to break up the play. But Romford adapted well, moving the ball across the pitch and maintaining a high work rate.
The breakthrough came through a well-executed short corner. Romford had a few set pieces in the first half, and after guidance from Lisa on the penalty sequence, Lorraine laid a perfect pass to Katie, who was well-positioned on the post, knocking the ball past the keeper to give Romford a 1-0 lead.
The Brentwood keeper put in a series of strong saves throughout the match, keeping her team in the game, but Romford's persistence paid off. Despite further pressure from the opposition, Romford's worked as a team defending and attacking every ball and we held on to secure the win.
It was a tough, competitive match in difficult conditions but was a well deserved win to end the first half of our season.
